The idea of an appropriate baby shower has changed over the years. At one time it was customary for friends and family to stop by the expectant parent’s home and drop off a small gift for the child. Over time the tradition became more like an afternoon tea party for the mom-to-be and her friends. Today a baby shower can be just about any type of gathering that fits with the lifestyle of the parents. Since Dad’s are much more involved in the process, they often also attend the shower and besides just attending, they take on a specific role in the event.
Coed Baby Showers
Many couples today plan on having a coed baby shower; friends of both parents attend and it becomes more like a social gathering than a typical baby shower. Sometimes traditional
baby shower games are left out all together in lieu of more appropriate games that both men and women enjoy. One hot new trend is to play Wii games at the party, which are really interactive and help to relax party goers. During the gift opening, sometimes the men will assemble any gifts that need to be assembled. It takes a load off the expectant Dad to do all of the work himself.
Family Friendly Baby Showers
The guests at a baby shower should be a representation of the people that are in the lives of the new parents-to-be. This sometimes means it is more appropriate to
invite families to the baby shower and make it a kid-friendly affair. If this is the case, the venue choice might be less traditional as well. Outdoor cookouts, rented community rooms or even a hotel banquet rooms.
A Day of Pampering
When baby shower gifts are not necessary, sometimes for a second or third child, it has become fashionable to treat the expectant Mom to a spa day with her girlfriends. Many times the mom-to-be has been having a hard time getting sleep or relaxing so a min retreat is a fantastic gift. Another popular trend is to give the expectant couple a night out, having a smaller gathering with friends at a restaurant to celebrate the new arrival is a popular choice.
Theme parties
One of the latest trends is to plan a theme party, based on the décor the parents have chosen for their newborns room or on a concept, such as a green party. Gifts, games, activities, party favors and the cake are usually items the centered around the theme.
